Butternuts that are either too small or too big are not accepted. A large number of farmers thus leave the out of size produce in the fields. In Autumn 2018, chefs from the Loire Valley decided to use about 2 tonnes of large butternuts to delight all tastes. Icing on the cake, the butternuts were bought at a profitable price for the farmers.

This action has been carried out within the framework of the Food Heroes European project. This objective is to initiate innovative projects to reduce food losses in agriculture with an added value for farmers. The stakeholders of this project are the Chamber of Agriculture of Pays de la Loire and AC3A.
