A symbol of the “substrate” industry, the Ecol’eau project, grouping 11 companies* and Agrocampus Ouest, the academic and steering partner of the project, has just published its main conclusions. The objective of the project was to contribute to a better efficiency of water for off-soil crops on substrates while considering their physical properties, root development and irrigation strategies. Using many greenhouse tests coupled with laboratory physical measurements of a large variety of substrates and plants submitted to different irrigation strategies, the project optimised and even redefined the choice of substrates, given the newly highlighted key parameters of the substrate and the irrigations indications defined by the producer.

With a view to always offer more efficient substrates, these results call for a closer look at the substrate texture. In order words, the size and shape of the particles to better control their physical properties and optimise their agronomic performance.
