Vines, wine, and climate change

Vegetable production has the
mission of ensuring production volumes according to a schedule and a level
of visual and sanitary quality expected by the markets. Faced with growing sanitary pressures
linked in particular to climate change, the
development of genetic resistance to diseases is a major focus
of varietal selection for breeders. Evaluated as part of the
process of registering varieties in the Official Catalog of Cultivated Varieties
, officially validated
varietal resistances/sensitivities enable their recognition by market gardeners for the
consolidated development of Sectors. The growing diversity of diseases
in France and Europe requires prioritization of the implementation
of these biotests, which has been carried out since the 1990s via the
Classification of Diseases of the Permanent Technical Committee for Selection, which
now manages more than 150 species x disease pairs.
